How to Choose an Office Chair in South Africa

Your chair matters more than your desk

Most people spend hours a day in their office chair and minutes choosing it. The wrong one shows up later as a stiff lower back, sore shoulders or a numb leg. The good news is that you don’t need to spend a fortune. You need to know what to check.

Step 1: Be honest about how long you sit

  • Under 4 hours a day: A solid mid-back operator chair with height adjustment is enough.
  • 4 to 8 hours a day: Look for lumbar support, adjustable armrests and an adjustable seat depth.
  • 8 hours or more, or existing back trouble: Choose a fully ergonomic chair with a tilt mechanism you can lock and adjust, and consider a headrest.

Step 2: Check the five adjustments that matter

    1. Seat height: Your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at roughly 90 degrees.
    2. Seat depth: You should be able to fit about two to three fingers between the seat edge and the back of your knees.
    3. Lumbar support: The backrest should fill the curve of your lower back, not push you forward.
    4. Armrests: Your elbows should rest lightly, with shoulders relaxed. Armrests that are too high or wide cause neck tension.
    5. Tilt and tension: The chair should move with you and be adjustable to your body weight.

Step 3: Choose the right material

    • Mesh: Breathable and good for warm rooms. Quality varies a lot, so check how the mesh feels under your sit bones.
    • Fabric: Comfortable and forgiving, but it holds heat and stains more easily.
    • PU or leather-look: Easy to wipe clean and looks smart, but it can get warm and may peel over time on cheaper models.

Step 4: Match the chair to the person

A chair sized for an average user may not suit someone very tall, very short or heavy. Check the weight rating and seat dimensions in the specifications. 150 KG | 180 KG | 200 KG | 250 KG

    Mistakes we see most often

    • Buying on looks alone
    • Choosing a chair you haven’t sat in or can’t return
    • Ignoring the weight rating
    • Skipping armrest and seat-depth adjustments
    • Buying one cheap chair for someone who will use it all day

    A quick buying checklist

    • Can I adjust the height, tilt and armrests?
    • Does the backrest support my lower back?
    • Is it rated for my weight?
    • Can I try it, or return it if it doesn’t fit? Return Policy
    • Is there a warranty on the mechanism? Period of 2 to 5 years

    FAQs

How much should I spend on an office chair? For daily use, plan for a chair built for it rather than the cheapest option.

Is mesh better than fabric? Neither is better for everyone. Mesh runs cooler, fabric is softer. The build quality matters more than the material.

How long should an office chair last? A well-built chair used daily can last many years, but cheaper gas lifts and foam wear sooner. Ask about warranty cover on the mechanism.
